Four City Council seats, one Treasurer, and one City Clerk seat will be open for election on November 3, 2020. As the City is transitioning to district elections, seats are open in Districts 2, 4, 5, and 6. All districts are four-year terms, except District 5, which is a two-year term until 2022. Persons interested in running for any of these seats may obtain candidate nomination papers from the City Clerk’s Office beginning Monday, July 13, 2020. The deadline for filing nomination paperwork is 5 p.m., Friday, August 7, 2020, unless an incumbent does not file by that time, in which case the filing period for that seat will be extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2020.
Potential candidates may obtain a Candidate’s Handbook beginning July 13, 2020 by making an appointment with the City Clerk’s Office. Handbooks are available by appointment only by contacting Karen L. Rees, city clerk at (707) 428-7767. The City Clerk’s Office is located at 1000 Webster Street, Fairfield, 4th floor. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, the office is closed on Friday, July 17, and August 7, 2020. However, since August 7 is the last day to file papers, the clerk will be available by appointment only. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, candidates are required to wear a mask (as will the clerk), and physical distancing will be followed.
In addition, potential candidates are required to comply with regulations of the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), which requires the filing of a State of California Form 501, “Candidate Intention Statement,” prior to the solicitation or receipt of any contributions, or expenditure of any personal funds, related to the upcoming election. Potential candidates are encouraged to contact the FPPC at its toll-free help line, 1-866-275-3772, for information and assistance with FPPC filing requirements or visit www.fppc.ca.gov.
