| | | | | The Fairfield Main Street Association has launched a new, recycling program for upcoming downtown events. Operation Green Tomato is an effort to create zero waste events in the city of Fairfield.
Keep an eye out for the Green Tomato Recycling Crew wearing green aprons at the Farmers' Market and the Thursdays on the Green events. They will answer questions about recycling, provide literature, and assist visitors with recycling. All guests are asked to pay close attention to the three receptacles and recycle accordingly.
Recycling receptacles will be placed at three separate locations throughout the event - a set at each end of Jefferson Street at the Farmers' Market, and a set on the lawn at Jefferson and Texas Streets. Free household battery waste disposal will also be available at the Main Street Association booth.
This year's Tomato Festival will also be green by increasing diversion of recyclables and compostable green/food waste.
These efforts are made possible through partnerships, grants, and donations from the Suisun Sewer District, Solano Garbage Company, the Cities of Fairfield and Suisun City, and CalRecycle. The goals are to reduce what is sent to the landfill and educate the community about the importance of recycling.
The Main Street Association is seeking green-minded individuals who are interested in joining the Green Tomato Team at the Tomato Festival on August 17-19. Up to 20 paid crew members will be hired and are essential to the success of a "zero waste attempt" for this year's event.
