The Commission was established in 1996 to create opportunities for youth input and involvement in local government. It is made up of 15 Fairfield residents ages 12 to 21 who are appointed by the Mayor and the City Council. In addition, the Commission may also choose to host and sponsor recreation and community events, champion specific causes and review city policies related to youth. The Fairfield Youth Commission meets on the first and third Mondays of each month in the Fairfield City Council Chamber at 7 p.m. All interested parties are invited and encouraged to attend meetings. An agenda is published prior to each meeting and can also be obtained at the Fairfield Community Center.
Each Youth Commissioner represents their high school and the youth in their community. Commissioners meet with local leaders like the Mayor, the City Council, the Community Services Commission and community groups to advocate for local youth. The Commission is responsible for working to make sure that youth are represented in the political process.
